Getting a French Phone Number in One Day
Prepaid SIM, monthly plan or eSIM: the documents you need and which operators to choose for a French number from day one.

Without a French number, it's hard to receive a verification code, get a callback from a landlord, or receive a delivery. Good news: you can get a French number the same day you arrive, with very few documents.
Prepaid or monthly plan
A prepaid card (also called a "top-up SIM") is sold in shops and supermarkets. You pay in advance, with no contract. It's the fastest option: show your ID, buy the card, and your number is active within minutes.
A monthly plan works differently. You sign a contract and pay each month. The offers are often better for calls and mobile data, but the operator asks for French bank details - meaning a bank account in France. If you don't have one yet, prepaid is your best option to start.
The eSIM
An eSIM is a virtual SIM card built into your phone. No physical card is needed: you scan a QR code and the line is activated. It's very convenient if your phone supports it (check in your settings).
The main advantage: you can activate a French eSIM before you even arrive in France, from your home country. Some operators offer prepaid eSIMs or no-commitment plans this way. Just check that your phone is not locked to your home country's operator.
Which operators for a new arrival?
In France, there are two main types of operators.
Major operators (which own their own network of towers) generally offer better coverage in rural areas and on public transport. They have physical shops across France, which makes activation and after-sales support easier.
Low-cost operators (also called virtual operators) use the same network as the major operators, but at a lower price. This is often the right choice if you live mainly in a city and budget matters.
Compare plans based on your needs (mobile data, international calls) and the coverage in your area - don't go by price alone.

Activate your line the same day
Follow the operator's instructions: insert the SIM or activate the eSIM in your settings. Your number is usually active within the day.
